Matthew 14:1-21
A Tale of Two Kingdoms
This passage contrasts the two kingdoms side by side. In Herod’s palace we see the kingdom of this world, marked by pride, corruption, vengeance, and ultimately death in the beheading of John the Baptist. Yet in contrast, we see Jesus welcoming the crowds with compassion, healing the sick, and feeding the five thousand. Through these two scenes, the passage shows us that while the kingdom of this world may appear attractive for a time, it ultimately leads to emptiness and destruction, while the kingdom of heaven brings life, mercy, and lasting blessing.
This sermon explores the compassion of Jesus, the meaning of the feeding of the five thousand, and what it reveals about the King of heaven. Jesus is the bread of life who provides for His people, welcomes the weary, and offers a kingdom far greater than anything this world can give. In the end, the passage confronts us with a choice: will we live for the fading kingdom of this world, or for the kingdom of heaven that far surpasses it?
