Living Faithfully Under Authority

This passage calls Christians to live faithfully under governing authorities, recognizing that all authority exists under God’s sovereignty. Though governments may be unjust or fail to uphold what is good, Christians should ordinarily obey the law, pursue peace, and respect those who govern. When authorities demand wrongdoing or celebrate evil, believers may need to refuse participation and speak against injustice, accepting the potential cost. Paul also calls Christians to pay what they owe, including taxes, revenue, respect, and honor. This means more than outward compliance; it requires a conscience shaped by God’s mercy. Our faith should shape how we live beyond the church, guiding us to be good citizens who neither criticize everything nor ignore what is wrong.
